Construction of affordable houses in Kibra’s Soweto zone B is already taking shape, with 4,054 modern units delivered under the Government’s Affordable Housing Programme (AHP), a key pillar of the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA).

Phase two which covers zones C and D is also underway and is expected to raise the number of houses with an additional of 15,000 units. The master plan provides for commercial and retail spaces, community halls, health clinics, water and electricity networks, waste management and sewerage drainage. 

The project is also playing an important role in economic empowerment, having created employment and business opportunities for young people and women living in Kibra. 

Families who relocated to create space for the development have been issued with identification cards and will be the first beneficiaries of the completed housing units. 

Upon completion, it is set to transform the largely informal settlement into a dignified and inclusive community, making it descent and more secure.
