Kang’o ka Jaramogi in Bondo, Siaya County, is preparing to become one of Kenya’s most important historical sites. The government has begun constructing a mausoleum in honour of the late former Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odinga, creating a permanent place where his life, political journey and contribution to the country can be remembered.

The Odinga family officially handed over the construction site to the government on July 20, 2026. The project will be led by the Kenya Defence Forces, working with the National Museums of Kenya and the Siaya County Government. It is expected to be completed by September 30, ahead of the first anniversary of Raila’s death.

The proposed structure features a five-sided design inspired by the Pentagon political alliance associated with Raila’s 2007 presidential campaign. Five steps will lead towards the grave, while the number five will appear in different parts of the design to represent unity, strength and completeness.

Beyond preserving Raila’s grave, the facility is expected to serve as a centre for education, research, digital archives and public reflection. It could also attract visitors to Bondo, support heritage tourism and create opportunities for local businesses.
