Ruto Commissions Raila Odinga Mausoleum, Honours His Democratic Legacy

President William Ruto today, Wednesday, October 7, 2026, commissioned the Raila Amolo Odinga Mausoleum at Kang’o ka Jaramogi in Bondo, Siaya County, honouring the late former Prime Minister’s contribution to Kenya’s democratic journey.

The President formally handed over the memorial to Mama Ida Odinga, who received it on behalf of the Odinga family. The ceremony comes ahead of the first anniversary of Raila’s death on October 15, during the month-long remembrance programme known as Mwezi wa Baba.

In his dedication speech, Ruto described Raila as a courageous patriot, Pan-Africanist and statesman whose service helped expand Kenya’s democratic space. He recalled the former Prime Minister’s endurance through detention, sacrifice and adversity in pursuit of freedom and justice.

The President said the country had built the mausoleum to honour Raila as the “father and guardian of our democracy.” He called for the memorial to preserve the values of democracy, equitable development through devolution and national unity that Raila championed.

Ruto’s tribute also recognised Raila’s life beyond politics. He remembered his companionship with Mama Ida, his love for his children and extended family, and the home that sustained him throughout his public service.

Addressing future generations, the President urged them to remember Raila’s sacrifices, draw inspiration from his courage and protect the democratic gains he helped secure. He formally dedicated the mausoleum under his hand and the Public Seal of the Republic, placing Raila’s memory within Kenya’s enduring national history.

The memorial features a polished marble platform, a grave framed in brown marble and historical photographs documenting Raila’s political journey. Displays within the mausoleum offer visitors a space to reflect on his life and contribution to the country.

Constructed by the Kenya Defence Forces, the facility is expected to come under the stewardship of the National Museums of Kenya, which will oversee its conservation, documentation and protection for future generations.

Public access is scheduled to begin on Thursday, October 8, allowing Kenyans to visit and pay their respects ahead of the main public commemoration on October 15.
