Kenya is preparing to mark one year since the death of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, with commemorative activities bringing together his family, leaders and supporters. The anniversary, on October 15, 2026, offers a moment to remember a political figure whose influence stretched across generations.
Affectionately known as Baba, Raila remains closely associated with Kenya’s democratic journey. For those gathering in his honour, the occasion is an opportunity to reflect on his public service and the values of dialogue, participation and unity highlighted by the memorial organisers.
A three-day programme running from October 13 to 15 includes an intergenerational dialogue in Kisumu, a candle-lighting ceremony at Kang’o ka Jaramogi and the main memorial gathering at Migwena Cultural Grounds in Bondo, Siaya County. The programme also includes poetry, music and a blood donation exercise.
On October 14, Mama Ida Odinga is scheduled to lead the candle-lighting ceremony at 6pm. Kenyans and supporters abroad have been invited to light candles simultaneously, creating a shared moment of remembrance across communities and borders.
Preparations at Migwena Grounds include security arrangements, crowd-control protocols and public health measures, coordinated by county and national authorities. President William Ruto is expected to attend Thursday’s commemoration, alongside other leaders and international guests.
Ida has appealed for peace and respect, emphasising that Raila belonged to people across political and religious divides. As the anniversary approaches, that message gives the gathering its central purpose: remembering Baba through unity, gratitude and reflection on a life that touched millions of Kenyans.
