Motorists using the busy Nairobi to Naivasha route could soon enjoy smoother journeys, with the contractor working on the Rironi to Naivasha highway section committing to complete tarmacking by December 2026.

The China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC) says construction on the section has reached about 80%, putting it on course for completion before the end of the year.

The works are part of the larger Sh200 billion Rironi to Mau Summit highway project, covering about 233 kilometres. The road is a key part of the Northern Corridor, carrying passengers and cargo between Nairobi, western Kenya, and neighbouring countries.

Full Highway Expected in 2027

While the Rironi to Naivasha section is nearing completion, construction across the wider project is still ongoing. The entire Rironi to Mau Summit highway is targeted for completion by June 2027.

The project is expected to ease congestion, improve road safety, and reduce travel times along one of Kenya’s busiest transport corridors.

Plans also include solar power installations and the planting of 20,000 trees along the highway.

For motorists who regularly face long traffic jams between Nairobi and Naivasha, the December target could bring some welcome relief.
