For many artisans, talent is not the problem. The biggest challenge is access to modern tools and equipment.
That could soon change after President William Ruto announced a KSh 80 million fund to support Nairobi’s Jua Kali artisans. The pledge was made during a meeting with about 5,000 artisans at State House, where they discussed the challenges facing small businesses.
What Will the Money Do?
The funds will be used to buy modern equipment for artisans. President Ruto directed artisan leaders to identify the tools they need, with Nairobi MPs helping compile the list before procurement begins.
Why It Matters
The Jua Kali sector employs thousands of Kenyans, including welders, mechanics, carpenters and fabricators. Better equipment could help them:
- Increase productivity.
- Improve the quality of their work.
- Earn higher incomes.
- Create more jobs.
The government also announced plans to formally certify skilled artisans who lack academic qualifications, making it easier for them to access employment opportunities, including projects under the Affordable Housing Programme.
If successfully implemented, the initiative could give thousands of small businesses the tools they need to grow and strengthen one of Kenya’s most important sectors.
