The Government has announced a comprehensive programme aimed at empowering thousands of artisans and mechanics in Nairobi County by improving access to training, certification, modern equipment and better workplaces.

Speaking during a meeting with more than 5,000 mechanics and artisans at State House, Nairobi, the Government highlighted the important contribution skilled workers make to Kenya’s economy. From mechanics and welders to plumbers, electricians, carpenters and other craftsmen, the informal sector supports millions of livelihoods and provides essential services across the country.

More than 40,000 Kenyans have already registered under the Recognition of Prior Learning programme. The initiative evaluates the skills and experience workers have gained outside formal classrooms before training and issuing them with nationally recognised certificates.

Skilled workers are being encouraged to enrol so that their expertise can be formally recognised. Certification will help artisans access better employment opportunities, qualify for contracts, obtain business licences and participate more fully in the economy.

The Government is also developing modern workshops for artisans and mechanics across Nairobi. These facilities will offer safer, more organised and dignified working environments while supporting the formalisation of businesses.

Additionally, KSh80 million will be provided to help Nairobi artisans and mechanics acquire modern tools and equipment. The investment is expected to improve productivity, strengthen small enterprises, create employment and increase incomes.

By recognising skills and investing in the informal sector, the Government aims to ensure that hardworking Kenyans can build successful and sustainable businesses.
