Ronaldo retires from international football, bids goodbye to Portugal after 23 years.

Portuguese Superstar and legendary forward Cristiano Ronaldo has announced his retirement from international football, bidding goodbye to the Portugal team after a 23-year stint on the global stage.

In his letter to Portugal, Ronaldo said he is bringing to an end the journey of representing the country at the international level, thanking everyone for all their timeless support.

"To the Portuguese people, the day has come to hand back the shirt and the captain's armband of the national team that belongs to all of us. I never felt that it was exclusively mine but for 23 years, I had the privilege and responsibility of wearing it, defending it and carrying it with me to stadiums all around the world. Today, the moment has come to pass it on to the future," he said.

"It was not an easy decision because some decisions are not made with the head alone. They are also made with the heart. I am bringing to an end a journey that began in August 2003 and changed my life forever."

CR7 as he was fondly known finishes his illustrious international campaign with an incredible 146 goals in 234 appearances, making him the most-capped player and highest goalscorer in men's international football history.

Since his debut in 2003, Ronaldo has represented his country with determination, passion and extraordinary talent, helping Portugal twice win the UEFA Nations League in 2019 and 2025, and the UEFA European Championship (Euros) in 2016.

The Portugal skipper also won the World's most prestigious trophy, the Ballon d'Or, 5 times, bagging it in 2008, 2013, 2014, 2016 and 2017.

Cristiano's departure not only leaves a huge gap in the Portugal national team but also in the global arena, as football fans will miss his eminent contribution for the game they so much love. Exits the Legend, enters a wave of inspiration for the next generation of talent.
