Earthquake in Tanzania Sends Tremors Across Nairobi, Kiambu, Murang’a and Kajiado

Residents in parts of Kenya felt tremors on Thursday, November 5, 2026, after an earthquake struck northwestern Tanzania near the Lake Victoria region. The shaking was reported in Nairobi, Kiambu, Murang’a and Kajiado, although no immediate damage or casualties were reported in Kenya.

The earthquake occurred at approximately 12:22 PM East Africa Time, with its epicentre located east of Ushirombo in Tanzania's Geita region. Reports of shaking in Kenya followed about five minutes later, with some residents noticing buildings and household items vibrating.

The earthquake was initially reported at magnitude 5.6 before subsequent revisions. The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) later listed it at magnitude 5.1, with a reported depth of approximately 10 kilometres. Its location, nearly 1,000 kilometres southwest of Nairobi, helps explain why the tremors were felt across parts of Kenya.

Although there were no immediate reports of damage in Kenya, the incident drew attention to the region's seismic activity. Earthquakes can be felt far from their epicentres, with the intensity experienced in different locations influenced by factors such as depth, distance and local ground conditions.

Residents are encouraged to rely on updates from recognised monitoring and disaster-response agencies and to follow established safety guidance if they experience further tremors.
