Liter Girls Senior School (formerly Liter Girls Secondary School) is a public girls’ day school located in the Tot area of Marakwet East Sub-county, Elgeyo Marakwet County, Kenya. It is classified as a C4 senior school under the Competency-Based Education system.
On 9 January 2025, President William Ruto officially commissioned the newly rebuilt Liter Girls High School complex. The modern facility stands as a symbol of recovery for a school and community long affected by both natural disaster and insecurity in the Kerio Valley. The government also allocated funds to support the rebuilding of other educational infrastructure in the region. The school’s challenges began earlier.
In April 2020, during heavy rains and a major mudslide in the Kaben area of Marakwet East, the original school infrastructure was completely destroyed. Classrooms, the dining hall, administration block, staff houses, laboratory, library, and the school bus were swept away or buried. Students were temporarily relocated to neighbouring institutions, including St. Paul’s Kapkondot Girls Secondary School, about 20 kilometres away.
Insecurity in the Kerio Valley compounded the difficulties. Banditry and cattle rustling periodically disrupted learning across the region. Schools faced low attendance, delayed start and early end of lessons for safety reasons, reduced teacher deployment, and declining parental confidence. Academic performance suffered as a result of these disruptions and the temporary displacement.Government intervention brought change. The school was reconstructed on safer community-donated .
By the time of the 2025 commissioning, the school had returned to its own campus with modern facilities. Enrolment has improved, and the institution is once again serving as a centre of learning for girls from the area. President Ruto described the rebuilt school as a “centre of excellence” and a testament to resilience, unity, and the transformative power of education. The story of Liter Girls Senior School is one of recovery and renewed hope for the girls of Kerio Valley, and for a community determined to ensure that education continues, even after disaster and conflict.
