Tanzania Mourns as President Samia Suluhu Hassan Loses Husband Hafidh Ameir Hassan

Tanzania has been plunged into mourning following the death of Hafidh Ameir Hassan, the husband of President Samia Suluhu Hassan.

The sad news was announced by Tanzania’s Vice President, Deogratius Ndejembi, on Monday, September 7, 2026. Hafidh died at approximately 8:00 a.m. while receiving treatment for a heart condition at Emilio Mzena Memorial Hospital in Zanzibar. Funeral arrangements are underway in Kizimkazi, Zanzibar. Hafidh became Tanzania’s first First Gentleman when President Samia assumed office in March 2021, becoming the country’s first female president. Despite his historic position, he largely remained away from the public spotlight, quietly supporting his wife as she carried the responsibility of leading the nation.

President Samia and Hafidh married in 1978 and were blessed with four children three sons and a daughter. Their daughter, Wanu Hafidh Ameir, has followed a path of public service as a legislator in Zanzibar.

Condolences have continued to pour in from leaders across East Africa. Kenyan President William Ruto described Hafidh as a lifelong companion to President Samia, a beloved father to their children and a distinguished son of Tanzania. He assured the Tanzanian people of Kenya’s solidarity during this painful period.

Hafidh Ameir Hassan will be remembered as a reserved and dignified figure who stood beside one of Africa’s most prominent female leaders without seeking attention for himself.

As Tanzania grieves, the region stands with President Samia, her children and the entire family. May they find strength and comfort during this difficult time, and may the soul of Hafidh Ameir Hassan rest in eternal peace.
