Construction of Kakamega County Teaching and Referral hospital in Lurambi, Kakamega, is ongoing, with the 350-bed Level 6 facility set for completion by December 2026.

Following President William Ruto’s intervention, the county government handed it over to the National government and as a result, the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) engineers took charge of the works, reviving the project.

The hospital is designed as a regional centre of excellence and will offer specialised services including advanced diagnostics, intensive care, oncology treatment, maternal and neonatal care, renal services and emergency response. 

Its facilities will also have linear accelerators, radiotherapy bunkers, neonatal intensive care unit, blood banking, haemodialysis services and theatres. Realization of this project will be a gamechanger as it is set to support medical training at Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) and other institutions, while creating about 5,000 jobs to stimulate the local economy. 

These reforms are expected to improve the quality of life and well-being of individuals and communities at large.
