President William Ruto has announced a new support package for village elders following a meeting at State House, Nairobi, aimed at strengthening grassroots administration and recognising their contribution to community leadership.

During the engagement on Tuesday, August 4th  2026, the President said village elders would begin receiving a monthly stipend of KSh3,000. He described the payment as a sign of respect for their service rather than a price for patriotism. Village elders play an important role in resolving disputes, supporting local security, mobilising residents and helping government programmes reach communities.

The government also plans to provide the elders with smartphones and training to improve communication, digital literacy and coordination with national administrators. President Ruto further directed the National Treasury to make provisions for village elders and their families to receive healthcare cover under the Social Health Authority from January 2027.

The meeting also highlighted plans to formally define the position of village elders within Kenya’s administrative system. A proposed national policy will outline their responsibilities in areas including public health awareness, agriculture, environmental protection, data collection and community security.

The reforms are expected to strengthen the link between citizens and the national government at the village level. By providing financial support, training, technology and healthcare protection, the administration says it is recognising village elders as essential partners in peacebuilding, service delivery and national development, especially in rural and underserved areas nationwide.
