President William Ruto has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to transforming Kenya’s police service through better training, modern facilities and improved welfare for officers.Speaking during the groundbreaking ceremony for the modernisation of the National Police College Main Campus in Kiganjo, Nyeri County, President Ruto said Kenya requires a modern, professional and efficient police service capable of responding to evolving security challenges while protecting the lives and property of citizens.
The modernisation programme will include upgrading the college’s shooting range, mess and library, alongside the construction of a new physical training facility. These improvements are expected to provide police recruits and serving officers with a better learning and working environment.
The project, supported by the United States in partnership with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, will also enhance instructor capacity, equip trainees with modern policing skills and promote the sharing of curricula and best practices among criminal justice institutions. People Daily
President Ruto also commissioned new police uniforms, describing the initiative as part of the broader effort to restore pride, discipline and professionalism within the National Police Service. His administration has pursued financial autonomy for the National Police Service, better housing, modern equipment, improved remuneration and stronger institutional capacity. The groundbreaking ceremony preceded the 149th Pass-Out Parade at Kiganjo, where approximately 10,000 newly trained officers were expected to formally join the National Police Service.
The transformation of Kiganjo is therefore not merely about new buildings, uniforms or equipment. It represents a wider ambition to establish the college as a modern centre of excellence and prepare officers who can confront emerging crimes while serving Kenyans with courage, fairness and integrity.
