The planned extension of the Standard Gauge Railway by 15 kilometres into Nairobi’s Central Business District marks a major milestone in Kenya’s transport and urban development journey.
For years, thousands of commuters have had to travel nearly 20 kilometres from Syokimau to access the city centre. This last-mile gap has slowed movement, increased costs and added pressure on Nairobi’s roads. The new single-track extension will help close that gap by providing direct access into the heart of the capital.
Designed for diesel locomotives travelling at up to 60 kilometres per hour, the line will include a 650-metre platform to support efficient passenger movement. Once complete, it will make commuting smoother, faster and more reliable for city residents, workers and businesses.
The project also forms part of the wider Nairobi Railway City initiative, which aims to transform urban transport and unlock new economic opportunities. By linking Nairobi to key towns including Narok, Bomet, Sotik, Sondu and Ahero, the railway expansion will strengthen regional connectivity and support trade, tourism and investment.
More than just a transport project, the SGR extension represents a step toward a more connected, efficient and productive Kenya. It is an investment in mobility, economic growth and the future of Nairobi as a modern regional hub.
