Only 20,000 New Voters? Where Are Kenya’s Gen Zs?

In its latest continuous voter registration update, IEBC reports only 20,754 new Kenyans have registered so far, far short of the 6.3 million target. Nairobi leads with 4,804, while Nyamira charts a dismal 18. But the real question looms: where are Gen Zs?

Kenyans online are left with frustration, confusion, and skepticism. Below is a snippet of the hilarious yet true emotional reactions.

“So out of millions of eligible Kenyans, only 20,754 have registered? Something’s clearly off; lack of awareness, ignorance, or fatigue among the younger generation?”

“@IEBCKenya, I’m in Kakamega. Can I register to vote in Homa Bay without travelling? Do proper sensitization, people don’t even know they can.”

“The distance to registration centers is far. Tharaka has just one center. How do you expect people to hike kilometers just to register? Move registration to polling stations!”

Continuous voter registration occurs at approved IEBC constituency offices; registration centers are currently being rolled out. Eligible citizens may register or transfer voter registration to another registration center within the registration period. You must be Kenyan, at least 18 years old, and present a national ID card or a valid Kenyan passport. The High Court has determined that IEBC is required to conduct continuous registration, but is not legally mandated to decentralize registration from the constituency level to every ward.

Gen Z, this is your moment. You trend, you influence, you shape culture. Now step into history. The low registration numbers aren’t inevitable. If you’re unregistered, walk into your constituency IEBC office and register now. Share this update. Tag your friends. Start a conversation. Because democracy is built by those who show up. Register. Be counted. Be the change.
